Writing for happy endings

It was safe to say that I first discovered the wonders of reading before I ever began to pen my first story. As a kid, my parents surrounded us with books, particularly reference materials that helped us with school work. I’ve always been fascinated with the pictures that come with encyclopedias, especially the Charlie Brown variety. But if you were to ask what was the very first book I finished reading, it was a paperback Nancy Drew novel.

Note that I mentioned the word finished. That’s because I’ve been reading a lot of books, but never have I actually had the patience to finish even the thin paperbacks. I was more of a visual reader and when there weren’t any drawings or images in these materials, I’d immediately lose interest. However, when I did manage to finish this Nancy Drew paperback, I began to read through our small collection of fiction books at home. When I couldn’t seem to get enough, I read the entire Nancy Drew hardcover books in our school library. Soon after, I was reading Sweet Valley and Sweet Dreams, until I graduated on those kinds of books and started devouring titles that were as thick as a pocketbook dictionary.

Looking at the kind of books I’ve read from childhood to puberty, I’ve always had a certain bias for romance. The first stories I wrote on my school notebooks were patterned after Sweet Dreams novels, and most of the time, the setting was based in the US. I find it weird to be writing about a place I’ve never set foot before, but equally so, I find my sense of imagination stretching its bounds from the usual confines of my mind.

From then on, I carried this love affair with the written word to this day where I mainly write for a living. I’ve mostly explored all forms of professional writing from being a journalist to a marketing and PR individual. In the coming months, my first romance fiction novella will be published locally under Bookware Publishing, marking my initial foray into fiction writing.

As I venture further in this kind of writing, I see myself again as a young girl, penning her first love story on the back pages of an old notebook…hoping that the very first people who will read my works will never stop believing that there’s always a happy ending for each and everyone of us.
